At Running Out of Hay, adoption is simple, supportive, and friendly. Whether you are a first time guinea pig owner or a longtime enthusiast, we are here to help you find the right fit.
How Adoption Works
- Browse available animals. View the guinea pigs below and use the contact page to ask any questions.
- Submit an application. This helps us learn more about you, your setup, and what kind of companion you are looking for.
- Get ready. Once your application is approved and your enclosure is ready, we will schedule your personalized adoption visit.
- Personalized adoption visit. We bring the adoption experience to you. We can bring several appropriate candidates for your family to meet, answer questions in your own space, and help make the transition as easy as possible. If you are introducing a new guinea pig to one you already have, we can also guide the introduction and make sure things are off to a good start before moving forward.
- Make it official. Once you have found the right fit, you will complete the adoption contract, pay the adoption fee, and welcome your new guinea pig home.
Home visit adoptions are available for adopters located in San Mateo County, San Francisco, Santa Clara County, San Leandro, Hayward, Castro Valley, Union City, Newark, and Fremont.

Every guinea pig is microchipped, helping ensure they can always find their way back to us. Spayed or neutered guinea pigs are also frequently available.
- Lifetime returns and support. Guinea pigs adopted from us can always return to our care if needed, and adopter support is available for life.
- Low cost bonding and grooming services. We are here to help you and your guinea pigs long after adoption day.
